Jan Bondeson : "Buried Alive"

Jan Bondeson MD, PhD is a former senior lecturer and consultant physician at Cardiff University. He is the author of many books on Forteana, including Cabinet of Medical Curiosities, The Feejee Mermaid, The Two-Headed Boy, the London Monster, Amazing Dogs and Strange Victoriana.

Today's talk will be based on his book Buried Alive, a history of the fear and the facts of being buried alive by mistake. Readers of Edgar Allan Poe may comfort themselves with the notion that he must have been exaggerating: surely, people could not have been at risk of being falsely diagnosed as dead and then buried alive? But such stories filled medical journal as well as fiction, and fear among the populace was high. It was even speculated, from the number of skeletons found in horrible contorted positions inside their coffins, that ten out of every hundred people were buried before they were dead...

Copies of some of Jan's books will be available to purchase on the evening.

Please note this talk will start at 7pm at the new venue : Upstairs at The Beehive Inn, 18-20 Grassmarket, Edinburgh EH1 2JU
